Description

Château La Dominique is a renowned wine producer located in the Saint-Émilion appellation of Bordeaux, France. With a long and rich history dating back to the 18th century, the estate has been modernized by the Fayat family, who purchased it in 1969. Château La Dominique is known for producing high-quality wines that are a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon. The vineyards are situated on a plateau of clay and limestone soils, providing excellent drainage and a unique terroir that is reflected in the wines.

The winemaking process at Château La Dominique is a combination of traditional and modern techniques. The grapes are hand-harvested and sorted before being fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. The wine is then aged in oak barrels for up to 18 months, depending on the vintage.

The flagship wine of Château La Dominique is the Grand Vin, which is a blend of 80% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine is known for its rich, full-bodied flavor profile, with notes of black fruit, spice, and vanilla. The Grand Vin is aged in new French oak barrels for 18 months, which adds complexity and depth to the wine.

In addition to the Grand Vin, Château La Dominique also produces a second wine called Les Angelots de La Dominique. This wine is a blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc and is aged in oak barrels for 12 months. Les Angelots de La Dominique is a more approachable wine that is meant to be enjoyed in its youth.

Overall, Château La Dominique is a producer that is known for its high-quality wines and commitment to excellence. The estate has a long and rich history, and the modernization efforts of the Fayat family have only served to enhance the quality of the wines. Whether you are a seasoned wine connoisseur or a casual drinker, Château La Dominique is a producer that is sure to impress.

Tasting notes

91 Points - The wine Advocate

The Château La Dominique 2014 is a blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc matured in 60% new oak. It has a little more composure on the nose compared to recent vintages: black cherries, iodine and floral notes developing, though I would still prefer to see more delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, quite plush in the mouth with soft blackberry tinged with allspice and graphite on the finish.
This is a structured La Dominique that just needs to muster a little more precision on the hard finish. Not bad, but this estate should aim for the very top of the pile given the brilliance of the wines produced back in the 1980s and early 1990s.
