Description

La Scolca is a renowned producer of Gavi di Gavi, a white wine made from the Cortese grape variety. The winery is located in the Piedmont region of Italy, specifically in the Gavi DOCG appellation. La Scolca has a long history of winemaking, dating back to the early 1900s when the founder, Giuseppe Soldati, began producing wine in the family's farmhouse.

The Gavi di Gavi D'Antan is a special wine produced by La Scolca. It is made from the oldest vines on the estate, which are over 60 years old. The grapes are hand-harvested and carefully selected to ensure only the best fruit is used. The wine is then aged for a minimum of five years in stainless steel tanks before being released.

The result is a complex and elegant wine with a deep golden color. On the nose, it has intense aromas of ripe fruit, honey, and toasted almonds. On the palate, it is full-bodied and rich, with flavors of citrus, pear, and a hint of minerality. The wine has a long and persistent finish, with a refreshing acidity that makes it a perfect pairing for seafood, pasta, and white meats.

La Scolca's commitment to quality and tradition has earned them numerous awards and accolades over the years. Their Gavi di Gavi D'Antan is a testament to their dedication to producing exceptional wines that showcase the unique terroir of the Gavi region. It is a wine that will continue to age gracefully for many years to come, making it a great addition to any wine cellar.

If you're looking for a special wine to add to your collection, La Scolca's Gavi di Gavi D'Antan is an excellent choice. With its complex flavors and long finish, it's sure to be a hit at any gathering.

Tasting notes

La Scola was the first winery established in Gavi in 1919 and not only ranks amongst the top Gavi producers but also one of the most historic white wine producers in Italy. Today, the estate is run by Giorgio Soldati, the founder’s great-grandson, and his daughter, Chiara, who represents the fifth generation. The estate’s 148 acres of vineyards are planted on the hills surrounding the family villa, 30-miles from the Mediterranean.

These steep slopes are made up of calcareous-clay and volcanic soils with iron, shot with veins of chalky limestone like that found in Champagne and Chablis, giving that characteristic flinty character. With Piedmont’s oldest Cortese vines (60+ years) and decades of pioneering, family winemaking tradition, La Scolca produces spectacular, complex, and concentrated age-worthy wines now found on the world’s finest wine lists.

The colour is light gold-green, and the nose has wonderful buttery mint notes, some Chablis-like flint and a crushed almond beneath. In the mouth there's a raft of cool, mouth-watering apple and lemon fruit, quite a rich texture, and that wet stone character. Long and poised it stays cool and precise and is an exceptional wine in many ways.
