Description

Château Rieussec is a renowned winery located in the Sauternes appellation of Bordeaux, France. The estate has a long and rich history dating back to the 18th century when it was owned by the Carmelite monks. In 1855, the estate was classified as a Premier Cru Classé in the official Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855, a testament to the quality of its wines.

The winery is known for its production of sweet white wines made from the Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Muscadelle grape varieties. The grapes are harvested by hand in several passes through the vineyard, selecting only the ripest and healthiest grapes. The grapes are then pressed and fermented in oak barrels, where they undergo a slow and controlled fermentation process.

The wines of Château Rieussec are characterized by their rich and complex flavors, with notes of honey, apricot, and citrus. They are also known for their high levels of residual sugar, which gives them a luscious and velvety texture. The wines are aged in oak barrels for up to 24 months, which adds a subtle hint of vanilla and spice to the final product.

Château Rieussec produces several different wines, including its flagship wine, the Château Rieussec Sauternes, which is a blend of Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Muscadelle. The estate also produces a second wine, the Carmes de Rieussec, which is made from younger vines and is aged for a shorter period of time. In addition, the winery produces a dry white wine, the R de Rieussec, which is made from Sauvignon Blanc and is fermented in stainless steel tanks.

Overall, Château Rieussec is a world-renowned winery that produces some of the finest sweet white wines in the world. Its long and rich history, combined with its commitment to quality and tradition, make it a must-visit destination for wine lovers and connoisseurs alike.

Tasting notes

96 Points - The wine Advocate

Pale lemon colored, the 2016 Rieussec comes sashaying out of the glass with a beautiful floral and citrus perfume of orange blossom, pink grapefruit, yuzu, lime leaves, lemongrass and fallen leaves with hints of nutmeg and candied ginger. Having shed a lot of the puppy fat from when I last tasted this from barrel, the palate reveals loads of elegant, tightly wound layers and seamless freshness, finishing long and fragrant.
