Description

Domaine Zind-Humbrecht is a renowned producer of Gewurztraminer wines, particularly their Grand Cru Hengst SGN. The history of the estate dates back to 1959 when Léonard Humbrecht and Geneviève Zind founded the winery. Today, the estate is run by their son, Olivier Humbrecht, who has continued the family tradition of producing exceptional wines.

The Gewurztraminer grape is known for its intense aromatics and rich, full-bodied character. The Hengst vineyard is located in the Alsace region of France and is known for producing some of the finest Gewurztraminer wines in the world. The Grand Cru designation is reserved for the best vineyards in Alsace, and the Hengst SGN is the highest classification for sweet wines.

The production of the Hengst SGN is a labor-intensive process that requires careful attention to detail. The grapes are hand-harvested in late October or early November, when they have reached their maximum ripeness. The juice is then fermented in oak barrels, where it undergoes a slow fermentation process that can take up to two years. The resulting wine is rich and complex, with notes of honey, apricot, and spice.

Domaine Zind-Humbrecht is committed to sustainable and organic farming practices, which are reflected in the quality of their wines. The estate has been certified organic since 1998 and biodynamic since 2002. These practices help to preserve the natural balance of the vineyard and produce wines that are true to their terroir.

Overall, the Hengst SGN is a truly exceptional wine that showcases the best of what the Alsace region has to offer. Its rich, complex character and intense aromatics make it a perfect pairing for spicy Asian cuisine or rich, creamy desserts. Whether you are a seasoned wine connoisseur or a casual enthusiast, the Hengst SGN is a wine that should not be missed.

Tasting notes

93 Points - The wine Advocate

Candied grapefruit rind, salted caramel, and quince preserves in the nose of Zind-Humbrecht’s 2008 Gewurztraminer Hengst Selection de Grains Nobles set the stage for a creamy palate loaded with salted caramel, marmalade, and quince jelly. At 11.9% alcohol, this displays a wafting sense of elegance, with ethereal, high-toned suggestions of pit fruit essences as well as an uncanny stream of fresh citrus carrying into a long, honeyed, exhilarating finish.
